Smart High Voltage Cables

Defective HV power cables can cause failures of critical moving equipment such as bucket wheel excavators, stacker/reclaimers in the metal industry and mining cranes. Causes for defects can be incorrect cable handling, winding of the cable, or torsion. This can lead to higher costs due to the failure of ongoing operations, or because delivery obligations can’t be met.

To prevent this, Siemens has developed a unique diagnostic system for analyzing the stress on high-voltage cables. It is based on a special optical sensor fiber in the cable, in combination with a high-resolution measuring device for real-time monitoring of flexible trailing and reeling cables.
